Habits

Stephen Covey's Habit
Stephen Covey's definition of habit

The book gives different examples of habits and how they show up in our lives.    Aidan has a habit of stealing my mouse when he gets bored.    You have a habit of getting your schoolwork done after you eat breakfast.   As you learned more about football you picked up habits of action -- you can do things without thinking that were hard at first.  It is the same when learning to drive a car.   Things that took a lot of thought and concentration are almost second nature.

A habit is the inclination to the performance of an act, and an ease in acting gained by practice.

You can see that habits can be helpful, or harmful, or basically neutral.    You can also see that habits can be formed or broken.   Sometimes it is easy and natural to make or break a habit -- you developed a habit of going to football practice three times a week, but it won't take much effort to break the habit.   Sometimes it takes a lot of energy --  most of us know someone who has gotten into a habit of swearing -- it can be a difficult habit to break because it comes out when the person is not thinking about it.

Can you think of some examples of habits in your life or our family life or the lives of your siblings?
